“Global Food Crisis will Worsen as Heat waves damage crops, research
finds” by Damian Carrington
Bias:
Newspaper’s bias: The newspaper takes a stand to place the
point which states that food insecurity, or “the global food crisis,” will
increase within its country due to heat waves. For this reason, the Guardian, a
UK based newspaper, tries to promote the idea of reducing “green house
emissions” in order to reduce the food crisis as the heat waves will damage
crops, which will take a toll on the maize exporting, which will eventually
reduce the GDP of the country.
Author’s Bias: The author, Damian Carrington, is the head of the environment section of the Guardian, and though his article is informative stating many facts, his bias is regarding saving the environment.
Author’s Bias: The author, Damian Carrington, is the head of the environment section of the Guardian, and though his article is informative stating many facts, his bias is regarding saving the environment.
Purpose: This article contains many facts and figures,
however, these are placed in the article in order to support the author’s
argument. For this reason, this article is more persuasive than informative as
he tries to make his readers understand the severity of the food crisis because
of climate change. He also tries to persuade them to start “being more energy
friendly” by cutting down on the emissions.
Argument: His argument simple states that in the next 50
years, the climate degradation will cause even more people – from the 3 billion
people who are affected by hunger – to be affected. The way this inevitable
process can be slowed down is by each individual trying to cut down on the
greenhouse gas emissions they release.
